355: Sizzle War

The mutants are a-comin’! But how? How is Marvel going to fit a whole species into their already bloated slate of movies, TV shows, and other assorted bric-a-brac? That’s what we aim to figure out, this week!

But first: we’ve got a heaping helping of Constantine and Warner Bros Discovery news, the first on Paul Levitz and Alan Davis’s upcoming Avengers book, and we get in depth with Merk’s own comic-skewed version of the Pivot Questionnare from Inside the Actors Studio. All that and Merk being so very, very wrong about steak sauce!

299: Jim “Shooter” McGavin – A Zero Hour Tie-In

Comics: Interrupted! This week, on the brink of an anniversary episode that will *change everything forever* [not a guarantee], we look back at one of our most-hated comic trends – the invasive crossover event that disrupts your monthly titles and throws their carefully-crafted plot lines into chaos! When did we first feel the pain of the synergy-fuelled tonal shift that turned new comic-book day from joy to frustration and confusion? What were the events that made us say “NO MORE”?

Plus: next week is our 300th episode! Comment with any questions you want us to answer, any at all, and you could win in the first-ever Zero Issues Art Print Giveaway!

Come hang out until the clock hits 300! We’ve also got all kinds of comic news (Loki season two! Batman ’89 approaches! Jameela Jamil fights She-Hulk! Hasbro’s gigantic Galactus!) and explore some very real hidden easter eggs and surprises everyone else missed from Loki and Black Widow!

296: The Summers Family Deadbeat Dad Reunion

Our Podcast Dad didn’t send the cheque on time, so this Father’s Day episode is a week late AND we’re talking about the deadbeat dads of comics! Take that! Superhero books have more than their fair share of bad father figures, but what makes one a deadbeat instead of a garden-variety neglectful or abusive A-hole? Which deadbeat super-dad is the deadbeatiest of all? And how many of these disappointments are from the Summers family? (Believe it or not, some aren’t!)

But that’s not all! We’ve got news: a Warren Ellis announcement finally set off a real response to allegations from SoManyOfUs.com; Miles Morales gets a new costume; and Ben Reilly returns to the role of Spider-Man. And then Merk guides Kyle & Bry through the many surprising covers of the Batman 1966 theme song – some you may not believe!

295: I Mean, It’s Fine

It’s podcasting time, for real! This week, we’re talking about the never-meant-for-release-but-you-can-totally-find-it-on-YouTube Fantastic Four movie, from 1994! Marvel at the use of TMNT-level Thing anamatronics, be dumbfounded by the age gap between Reed and Sue, struggle in vain to understand what Doom is saying over the clacking of his metal manacles, and ignore The Jeweler! Ignore them!

Plus: news about Dark Horse, Spider-Verse, and McFarlane Toys, and a quiz all about unproduced unmovies! They were never made, and now they are un!

284: What If Wolverine Was a Toronto Raccoon?

After the marathon Snyder Cut episode of last week, how about something shorter, lighter & more fast paced? And raccoons. We got ya covered. This week the boys are all over the map exploring what else? Comics! And Worf. The Worf Effect to be more precise. The Worf Effect is when a big, bad character is used as a punching bag to make someone else seem bad ass. But then that big, bad character gets overused as a punching bag so…. they seem… well…. like Worf… with the flu. We touch on a ton of characters that get this-Doomsday, Superman, Juggernaut, Martian Manhunter, Silver Surfer, Galactus and of course, Wolverine. Then Bry tells a story of his encounter with Toronto Raccoons. It makes sense. All of this. It does. I swear. All this and Kyle has a ‘read this now’, weird star wars additions to Disney +, an Hourman movie and Ed Brubaker and his troubled relationship with the Winter Soldier. Plus, Andy Richter as the Beyonder! And find out who MURDER MAN is and WHO he MURDERED, MAN!!

273: Kraven the Deli Owner

QUITTERS!! The lot of ’em!!! That’s what superheroes are! And that’s what we’re talking about this week. Can you think of a hero that hasn’t, even for just a short bit, called it quits? It’s a small list. From Tony Stark and the sauce, Daredevil and his law career, Wonder Woman getting sick of life off Paradise Island, to Spidey and…. well…. every five minutes, heroes love to quit. We delve deep. Who quit and became a blind bartender? Who quit and became Black Beard? And so many more. Plus we talk news! There are comic cons going on soon….. uh….. ok. Black Panther delays. Jeff Lemire’s Sweet Tooth show. And Merk delves into manga (a new thing for him) in a ‘read this now’. So don’t quit now! You’re almost there! Sit back, relax, click that button and listen to Kraven the Deli Owner serve up a lil’ bite of deligh …. ah… quit it.

262: Draclactus OR GaDractus OR Galacula

Boo! Boooooooooo! Boooooo!

This week, we’re talking about monsters, and how they seem to end up in mainstream superhero books pretty dang often. Werewolf By Night, Cap Wolf, that time The Living Mummy was part of a super hero team…there’s a precedent!

But first, we cover the return of Jared Leto’s Joker, Spider-Man 3 rumours, and more in the News, and we try to debate who’s better, Dracula or Dracula, in the Warmup!

(Boo!)

193: Keith David as Galactus – I want Keith David Wearing a Helmet

It’s a LIGHTNING ROUND episode! What does that mean? That means we have a number of quick short topics & games & shenanigans that we barrel through, and this week we do that with a returning guest, Mr Ryan Mackett, artist, movie reviewer, and lover of superman and sharks (check out his stuff here!) ! What topics & games you ask? As Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider, what radioactive animal bites you, and what happens? What character would you like to write a character defining arc for ( a la Grant Morrisson X-Men)? We do a crazy round of fantasy casting actors into dream (and at times nightmare) roles in comicdom. All that and a game of 1991 Marvel Trading Cards-a card is picked and you have to argue a ridiculous viewpoint for that character, ie-Why would Wonder Man make an amazing US President? All that and a bag o’ chips, or is it just a bag o’ chips? Listen and decide, shrewd believers!
