Comics and movies! Movies and comics! Superheroes from comics and movies have been entrenched in pop culture as a mainstay for quite a while now (some say too long). But what about the superhero movies that AREN’T based on comics?
What about superhero like films that started as films, based on nothing previously?
Super. Push. Unbreakable. Darkman. And Kyle’s favourite Meteor Man! It’s the meatiest!
It all started with the idea of watching Orgazmo together…… and it went downhill from there….
To us, our listeners! X-Men ’97’s first season is about halfway over and there’s been a lot to discuss. So let’s do that! We dig into the first four episodes of the nostalgic revival cartoon, and while we all enjoyed it, we have some very different takes on the show. How well does it adapt the comics’ extensive, and often lengthy, source material into a much shorter runtime? Does the new “look” and animation style hold up to the old show, and to other animated series running today? How well do the returning cast and new recruits pick up where the old show left off? And of course a tangent leads us to discuss whether or not Wolverine’s claws could possibly be sterile (maybe there’s a little purel dispenser in there). And plenty more!
But that’s not all, we’ve got some comics to talk about! Namely, the new “Savage Sword of Conan” and “Bat-Man: First Knight”! And they’re both in an oversized magazine format? What’re the odds??

And Ghost Rider goes against Satan himself without a prayer… but perhaps a friend in a cool blue jacket can help? Maybe he’s a certain messiah, maybe he owns a van, maybe Comics Jesus is always with us after all??
We’ve got a real Beast Wars situation on our hands! Okay, so maybe not a *real* Beast Wars situation, what with the no Transformers to speak of, but more of a lower case beast wars situation. These beasts, they be a-warrin’! This week, March Madness returns with an animal-themed twist! Who’s going to be king of the jungle? It’s going to be better than that new Godzilla movie, but probably not as good as the Godzilla movie from a few months ago, because, like, that one won an Oscar? That’s pretty neat.
But first! Merk has a brand new card game for us to play, and by brand new, I mean it’s basically a comic book version of that card game A**hole. Which means it’s going to be great, because that game’s almost as good as that Godzilla movie! The good one, the Oscar one.

It’s time for another LIGHTNING ROUND! Featuring multiple concise but electric mini-segments! No attention span required!
Kyle challenges us to pit randomly-selected comic characters against each other in battle with weapons, in a completely original segment we’re calling, uh, SUPAR FITES: “Fellow Chucker” Alfred vs. “Bird Master” Skin! Vandal Savage with New Hat vs. Tombstone with a Super Mario mushroom! Mister Terrific, turned into a pig like that JLU episode vs. Dex-Starr, except the kitty cannot stop tooting! And then, a round of “COOL OR FOOL”, in which we decide if comic characters would be cool when we need them to be cool! (Spoiler: Hawkman does not pass the test.)
Bry actually had some time to read comics recently and he wants to talk about ‘em in a couple READ THIS NOW segments! First, the very refreshing new “Ultimate Spider-Man” book from Jonathan Hickman, Marco Chechetto & Matthew Wilson! Then, a slightly belated review of “The Midnite Show” by Cullen Bunn, Brian Hurtt, Bill Crabtree & Jim Campbell! BONUS: we chat about the publishing schedule of horror comics, and also reminisce about those fold-out recap sections Marvel used to have; they should bring those back.

Do Thor and Jarvis share war stories over bong hits? Which version of Superman got high on Kryptonite dust? What are the subtle differences between MGH, Kick, and Ultimate Banshee (a drug, not a man)?
