In honour of Steve Ditko’s recent 89th birthday, and the release of Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in theatres, it’s time to talk all things Ditko: the work, characters, legacy, philosophy, and the recent projects of the famously reclusive comics legend! We have an objectively great time! Also: we talk about the Doctor Strange movies — that’s right, movies! — and give Wong some long-overdue respect.
2015 is DEAD! So the boys look forward to 2016 for comics, movies and the podcast. What do we want to see? Less amazing stuff… so our wallets don’t explode? We tangent (us? REALLY?) into Matt Fraction comics, The Defenders, gripes about DC Comics, shesmadeofspiders.com, a Ditko fist-bump for Dr Strange, and what each of us have in the works for 2016! Announcements and projects abound!!
We’ve reached the end of the Advent Calendar! It’s Christmas Day, and after a month of daily episodes, it’s time to relax by the Darth Vader Yule Log and have a nice fireside chat. There’s no plan, no format, just a natural conversation covering comics TV series, the Doctor Strange movie, the new Scarlet Witch comic, The Goddamned, The Massive and Ninth Wave, and even a text battle with Kyle’s daughter!
This week we’re talking about magic! Also, Magik. ALSO: various magic doctors, Zatanna, making non-magical characters into magical ones, Captain Britain, and, ummm, Belasco Hot Sauce? It’s gonna be a journey. A MAGICAL journey. (Sorry about that.)
You know those series that are, like, shorter than regular series? Of course you do! They’re miniseries, and they’re often great! So join us as we discuss the pros and cons of self-contained limited series, talk about our favourite examples, ponder how they fit into the current comics landscape, and go off on some tangents about Doctor Strange, Secret Wars, and Alan Moore’s fancy wedding hat. All that and more in the Zero Issues Miniseries Episode: Part 1 of 1!
Kyle takes the episode off sick, so he gets a shout-out in the title! Merk and Bry get a little tipsy and talk about their dream creators and directions on mainstream books, how to “fix” Superman, our desert-island picks, the nature of superhero comics, and Merk makes his Doctor Strange pitch to Marvel!
